Skiing Mishap Takes One Life

A 21-year-old Anchorage man died Saturday after a skiing mishap at Mt. Alyeska Resort.

Alaska State Troopers said Richard William Allen died of asphyxiation after the mishap around 11 a.m. near the waterfall area at the resort.

Troopers said a friend of Allen's, John Kimball of Girdwood, noticed the fall and attempted to render assistance.  But efforts by Kimball and the Ski Patrol at resuscitation failed.

Troopers said there was no sign of foul play.

Anchorage Times records indicate one other death on the mountainside.

An elderly man was killed and his wife injured Aug. 7, 1961, after he fell from a resort chairlift.

Arthur Weisman, 71, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died in Providence Hospital four hours after the accident.  His wife was listed in satisfactory condition.

An Alaska State Trooper report said Weisman and his wife fell after his hat blew off as the lift approached a mountain-top platform and Weisman stood up to grab it.

Allen had worked with his father, George H. Allen, as vice president and part-owner of Allen Excavating Co.

An avid outdoorsman, Allen skied regularly and belonged to a scuba diving club.  He also played football while attending Diamond High School where he graduated in 1970.  He hunted frequently.

Born July 18, 1952 he is survived by his parents, Mr. And Mrs. George H. Allen; brothers, Rollin Archer and Michael Allen of Anchorage, Tom Archer with the Navy in San Diego, Calif., and David Allen with the Navy in Japan.

Other survivors include paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Freeman, and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles O. Charley, all of Eagle Point, Ore.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

The family suggests contributions in young Allen's name to the fund of the donor's choice.
